Description

The wine is dark and dense on appearance. The brooding nose is intense and shows an abundance of dark fruits. Aromas of blackberry, blueberry, baking spices, and heady whiffs of violets create complexity. Dark berry fruit, licorice, notes of sweet tobacco, and allspice follow through onto a vibrant mid-palate with bright, svelte tannins and a silky texture. The wine shows exceptional balance with fresh, integrated acidity. Dark plums, black olives, and hints of tar and cigar box linger on an earthy finish. This classic, rustic Rhone style blend again over delivers at its attractive price point

For our 2018 blend, we opted for a higher percentage of Syrah we love working with this robust,\nbrambly variety with its fine aromas of violets and ripe plums. We have therefore again accentuated a\nspicy, peppery profile yet retaining the juicy, fruity character which is a hallmark of our Wolftrap\nRed. Mourvedre from the Swartland again lended a touch of austerity, a red fruit character and smoky\nbody with the dash of Viognier contributing perfume and vibrancy.

Boekenhoutskloof was established in 1776. Located in the furthest corner of the beautiful Franschhoek valley, the farm's name means 'ravine of the Boekenhout' (pronounced Book-n-Howed). Boekenhout is an indigenous Cape Beech tree greatly prized for furniture making. In 1993 the farm and homestead was bought and restored and a new vineyard planting programme was established that now includes Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. Boekenhoutskloof's phenomenal success owes much to both its cellarmaster from the start, Marc Kent, and Tim Rands, its dynamic founder. It is not just that Boekenhoutskloof makes cabernet, shiraz, semillon and noble late harvest wines that are hard to outclass (and often hard to find), the breadth of achievement and sheer growth has been equally impressive. The Chocolate Block red blend is made in locally unmatched quantities given its price and quality; at more easily affordable levels the Porcupine Ridge and Wolftrap wines deliver more than expected at their price points, but that judgment could really be made of all the wines.
