OUR PEOPLE
Robert Mason – Wine Advisor, Chiswick
When the opportunity arose to join The Good Wine Shop, I jumped at the chance! Prior to stints in all shops across the company, my experiences lay in multiple facets of the wider drinks industry. Starting as a student in retail supermarkets where the wine aisle was a mysterious and fascinating place, through to later employment in pubs, nightclubs and cocktail bars as a mixologist. So retail with a smattering of hospitality, is my ideal place to be.
It wasn’t until I rekindled my thirst for knowledge that I truly discovered wine. Now, with accreditation from the WSET, I hold the Diploma in Wines & Spirits and am a certified Wine Educator too. I am constantly learning, as such, since 2019 I have continued to write for leading wine industry publications and have begun to regularly contribute to the TGWS blog. When I am not working, I am with my wife & son or writing!
As for wine: my favourite would be whatever is in my glass! Just so long as it is well-made, interesting and delicious.
Adrian Fry – Wine Advisor, Chiswick
I seriously fell in love with wine over a delicious glass of Bolgheri Rosso in an enoteca in Rome some years ago. I guess that’s where my journey ‘officially’ begun.
Having decided I wanted my passion to become my professional life, I jumped out of corporate HR and haven’t looked back since. A short spell owning my own wine shop in Henley on Thames subsequently led me to The Good Wine Shop and I couldn’t be happier here.
I love so many different wine styles and look for those which speak both of the care the winemaker has invested and also of their region.
Richard Wilson – Buying, Education & Training Coordinator
Over ten years ago, an opportunity to work with wine, a subject close to my heart, happily put an end to my career in Financial Services. With four years under my belt at TGWS, I now co-ordinate the wine buying, master classes and staff training, but keep my hand in on the shop floor. I love a wine underdog; prefer white to red and am a Riesling fanatic and acid freak. Outside of my dream job, injuries and responsible wine drinking permitting, I attempt the odd marathon or triathlon. Have I cracked that mid-life crisis yet? I think so.
Paul Burnside – Wine Advisor, Chiswick
A Chiswick resident for 20 years, I’ve finally decided to wind down my previous career and I’m delighted to have crossed the counter at TGWS! I’m a big fan of juicy reds like barbera, zinfandel and mourvedre that don’t get the love they deserve and aromatic whites like chenin blanc and pinot gris. Region-wise, South Africa is hard to beat offering great variety and terrific value.
I’ve had the travel bug for many years, so if you don’t see me in the shop for a while then (hopefully!) I’m away on some new adventure. I’ve visited wineries from Okanagan to Barossa, but the boom in UK winemaking is really exciting – they’re even popping up here in London!
