Description

This Premier Cru Chablis comes from low yielding vines in the famed Montmains vineyard.  A really classy wine, it is bone dry with pure fruit flavours, exceptional mineral complexity and a hint of toast. The incredibly long and pleasant finish makes this a top-quality Chablis that's superb with white fish or poached salmon.

+40 years old vines in the Butteaux section of the Montmain Premier Cru climate. The vineyard (1,15 Ha) is located on the summit of a slope with exceptional draining and poor soils composed mainly of limestone, clay and marine fossils, as the area was a sea floor 150 million years ago. 45 Hl/ Ha. Traditional fermentation with native yeast in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for 11 months. Fewer than 725 cases produced.

In 1997 Michel George left the local cooperative to become an independent vigneron. Today his sons, David and Jonathan George-Perpiea, make wine from their family estate in the picturesque village of Courgis. The family's vines are planted only in steep Chablis hillsides. The Estate's Petit Chablis is made from a plot with Portlandian soil of aged limestone that lies in the shadow of the great Montmain vineyard. The Chablis, Vieilles Vignes and Montmains 'Butteaux' wines are grown in Kimmeridgian soils comprised of limestone, clay and marine fossils (from the area's history as a sea floor). The wine is fermented in stainless steel using natural yeasts. The wines are then left to settle naturally and kept on the lees to enhance complexity. Domaine George makes elegant and classic wines. Tastings take place in the original eighteenth century cellar.

Wine Advocate 90pts (2015) - The 2015 Chablis 1Er Cru Montmains les Butteaux comes from 1.15 hectares of 40-year-old vines that spend ten months on the lees. It has an austere, focused and quite intense bouquet that exudes the essence of Chablis—an achievement in this warm vintage. The palate is well balanced, with a slightly waxy opening, well-judged acidity, perhaps losing a touch of complexity toward the finish, but there is satisfying length here. This is worth keeping in bottle for a year or two as it shows good potential. This is a very impressive Chablis from winemaker Jonathan George.
