Knewitz Goldberg Riesling, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2016

About this wine

Goldberg is a warm south-facing site and this wine is aged in old 1,200 litre barrels. The warmth expresses itself with a juicy green apple fruit and the high limestone content here gives a great acid structure and texture. If you are looking for a top-end, dry German Riesling at a sensible price look no further. Two brothers in their 20's are establishing a reputation for themselves, so buy now before they get well known (and prices go up).

"Spicy yellow plums and a touch of orange. ‘Goldberg’ (Golden hill) seems appropriate. That bitter-orange character is subtle on the palate and again the lees work has given a definite texture here. Very high acidity, just in balance with the ripe yellow fruit, and giving direction and impressive length. Needs more time. GV" (JH) jancisrobinson.com. GV = good value.
