Juan Gil Silver Label Monastrell, Jumilla, Spain, 2017

About this wine

The Jumilla region is just inland, south east of Alicante on the Mediterranean side of Spain. It's an area that is winning an increasing following for its luscious, rich reds based on the Monastrell grape - a grape we know better as Mourvèdre in the south of France. In this example the vines are more than 40 years old and the combination of the extra concentration that brings coupled with the austere dry and hot local climate yields dense rich fruit which is then aged for a year in French oak. This really is a wine for a cold evening and big food.
