Description

Duncan Savage has succeeded in harnessing the power, concentration and intensity of these two noble red varieties and using his own brand of vinous alchemy, crafted a wine full of energy, minerality and fruit concentration. Compared to the maiden 2016, this vintage seems to unfurl extra layers of concentration and fruit brightness, but with much tighter orchestration. The nose is rocky and mineral revealing river gravel, graphite and grey slate with a perfumed Parma violet lift, blueberry, sweet red cherries, strawberry bon bons and rock candy confectionary notes. Mouth-filling and fleshy with impressive black berry and chalky graphite tannins. Lithe and elegant, harmoniously focused and confident with alluring savoury, sappy bramble berry finish.

The majority of the grapes for this wine are sourced from Malgas near Swellendam hence the name, Are We There Yet. The vineyard belongs to David Trafford and is planted to a number of interesting varieties. The vines are planted as bush vines on an incredibly rocky soil in a harsh environment. Both red varieties were picked on the same day and cofermented in open top fermenters with the Syrah kept as whole bunch clusters, while the Touriga Nacional was destemmed. Aged in 500 liter French oak for 11 months before bottling, you can already see in the space of only two vintages how Duncan has tweaked both picking times and the winemaking.

Duncan Savage, previously the winemaker at Cape Point Vineyards, introduced his own label in 2011 with a goal to produce rock-solid, classic and elegant wines. Through his time at Cape Point, Duncan grew to understand maritime vineyards, which led him to source grapes for Savage wines from maritime and high altitude sites around the Western Cape. These small, hand-selected parcels receive a lot of love and attention throughout the growing season. Each vineyard's unique terroir contributes in its own special way to the blends. Savage wines are inspired by the great older reds from South Africa and abroad that have stood the test of time, and are made with gentle extraction, minimal intervention, and moderate alcohol.
