Ojai, Roll Ranch Viognier Ventura County 2018
In this Viognier there’s a pretty florality with scents of white jasmine and honeysuckle, while some fruity promise comes with wafts of melon, lime and white nectarine. That’s countered by an earthy vineyard character, showing streaks of crushed rocks, walnuts and fennel. This wine is aromatically evocative and enticing with a stance that is uncommonly fresh and snappy. The palate has great tension, giving a delicately coating richness while also bursting with energy; the finish is reverberant with minerals and zestiness.
A good part of the quality of this wine comes from the tiny yields that we get from the two acres of Viognier at Roll Ranch. With just one ton/acre produced each year, we can make only five barrels of this wine. That’s painful for us and our customers, but that small crop ripens efficiently and can boast powerful personality without compromising acidity. The Ojai Vineyard produces wines where, as much as possible, nothing is added or taken away.
