I grew up on the farm where these vines are grown, so this was a highly anticipated bottle.
There’s a toffee apple flavour that develops as you drink and the wine softens becoming quite buttery, despite its zesty start. In fact if I’d been served this and told it was a Chardonnay I’d have believed it (though I should add that it was enjoyed with a friend who hates Chardonnay & buttery wines who absolutely loved Jan Niemand) It’s a highly drinkable bottle that tastes of sunshine & summer.
Highly recommended (despite my bias) as Pieter is one of the most interesting wine makers coming out of South Africa right now.
