4 Kilos, Vino de la Tierra 2018
Callet 90%, Mantonegro 10%
A blend of local varieties Callet and Mantonegro, this wine is perhaps the best representation of Mallorca’s terroir and viticultural potential. Savoury and ripe, with a unique nose of aromatic herbs among the red and black fruit. A supremely balanced and pleasurable wine.
Half in stainless steel tanks and half in 2500 litre wood vats. Aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels.
4Kilos was set up in 2006 by former Anima Negra winemaker Francesc Grimalt (known for his efforts in rescuing the Callet variety) and musician Sergio Caballero (who is also founding partner and director of the Sonar music festival), 4Kilos first vintage was vinified in a milk refrigeration unit. Today they use grapes from north and south of Mallorca some international varieties as well as local ones such as Mantonegro and Fogoneu - and vinify them in a converted sheep farm, using a combination of stainless steel and open top oak fermenters. They are committed not only to native varieties, but also to finding the right combination of strain, soil, and climate for each wine. The name 4Kilos comes from their initial investment of 4 million pesetas, which so far looks like money well spent.
Wine Advocate 96pts (2016) - The 2016 4 Kilos is Callet from old vines and is from a fresher year that produced a very elegant and fine wine. They didn't change anything in the vinification or aging, because they changed in 2013, and the wine just follows that path. This has to be one of the finest vintages for Callet; the wine is super elegant, subtle and nuanced, with the Mediterranean character and no trace of oak. Callet is a delicate grape and needs a gentle aging, and so they use 600-liter barrels and 2,500-liter oval vats, which respects the floral quality of the grape. The palate is medium-bodied and has fine tannins with grip, moderate acidity and moderate alcohol, all in great harmony and balance. This is simply superb.
