Zahel, Kaasgraben-Nussberg Gemischter Satz 2017

Gemischter Satz is literally a field blend and a speciality of the local Viennese area. A variety of grapes are co- planted in a vineyard and co-fermented, creating a truly unique and stimulating wine. In the Nussberg vineyard these grapes are Chardonnay, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris/ Pinot Grigio) and a small amount of Gewurztraminer. Nussberg’s soil structure is the stoniest of the Viennese wine growing regions, characterized by a weathered shell-limestone floor and sandy clay/loam terraces. The geological formation of this region dates back to the same age as the French wine growing regions of Burgundy and Champagne. After fermentation the wine is aged on its lees for 5 months in stainless steel tanks. The wine can age 5-12 years and best enjoyed like a fine white burgundy at around 10° C. 

Alex & Hillary Zahel are the 4th generation winemaker of Zahel, having been passed the torch by Alex’s uncle Richard. Since taking the lead, they proudly continues the tradition of ushering Vienna’s most charming wines from the vineyard into the bottle. The family also runs a Heurigen, a wine tavern serving local food and wine. The vineyards can be found just on the outskirts of Vienna and literally calling for wine lovers to visit.
