Description

The Tenuta San Guido, Le Difese 2019, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, is a wine distinguished by a good structure. It is extremely supple, making it very pleasant and drinkable. Fragrant ripe raspberries and cranberries, notes of violet and savoury hints of dried oregano and tarragon, sun-ripened tomatoes define the nose. The palate is fresh, medium weight and easy with ripe tannins and juicy acidity. Drink within the next three years.

The carefully selected grape bunches are destemmed, after which the berries are softly pressed. Primary fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature without the addition of external yeasts. Maceration on the skins lasts for 12-15 days for Cabernet Sauvignon and for about 15-18 days for Sangiovese, with subsequent phases of pumping over and delestage to soften and refine the tannins. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in steel.
The wine is aged for about 8 months in third-use French oak barriques, previously used for Sassicaia.

The Incisa della Rocchetta family revolutionised the Italian wine scene by creating a totally new genre: the Super-Tuscan. Tenuta San Guido is now a legendary estate. It was first planted in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who noted the similarity between Bolgheri’s terroir and that of the Graves in France. Apart from their iconic Sassicaia, the estate produces a second and a third wine, the Guidalberto and the Le Difese respectively. Calling it a third wine may carry the risk of people thinking it is a mediocre wine, but that would be a big mistake. Le Difese drinks easily, but is a distinguished and well made wine.
