Storm Vineyards, Ridge Pinot Noir 2019
Ridge Pinot Noir hails from a cool, eastern slope in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge with low-vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soil. This wine shows richness and generosity with black cherry and spice with a saline undertone. Silky tannins complement the voluptuous, dark fruit perfume. Poise and elegance with spicy notes and characteristic of the cool slope's low-vigour, stony, clay-rich shale soil.
Storm Wines 'Ridge' Pinot Noir is sourced from a cool, eastern slope in the Hemel en-Aarde Ridge. At 330m the Ridge Pinot Noir is the highest site of the Storm Wines range and benefits from a cool south easterly wind. Its easterly exposition means a longer hang time for the fruit and this, combined with similar Bokkeveld shale and clay soils as Vrede, means that stylistically the Ridge sits in between Vrede and Ignis.
Storm is a recent addition to the South African wine scene, having released their first vintage in 2014. Formerly head winemaker at Hamilton Russell, Hannes Storm produces beautiful Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in a hands-off fashion, and is the only producer to bottle Pinots from each of the three sub-regions in the Hemel-en-Aarde; namely, the Valley, Upper Valley and Ridge. A respected viticulturist, he established a number of the top vineyards in the region himself, and is now proud to work exclusively with his own, estate-grown fruit.
