Schnabel, Legionarin Sauvignon Blanc 2019
Karl and Eva Schabel
From one of the pioneering winemaking families in Austria’s burgeoning minimal intervention scene, this is a powerful, expressive take on sauvignon blanc. Fresh and lively, yes, but quite mineral-rich due to the presence of quartz, flint and silica in the very stony soils. Great depth of flavour and texture, with a creaminess, roundness that finishes in a soft ripe peachy note.
You do not get much more natural wine makers than these guys. No addition of sulfur or other additives, no technical manipulation, open mash fermentation in vats, no use of mash pumps and Aging in oak barrels filled by hand in small batches
The Schnabels have always been connected to the earth by winemaking and holding cattle. They have never followed a trend, but the inner programme of being a real farmer and winemaker, and have always produced what the soil has provided in accordance with nature. They are farmers with all their heart and deepest conviction. The economic doing at the Ermihof is shaped by the principle that "they are only guests on earth which must be preserved for future generations". We feel responsible for the piece of earth that has been given to us and see it as an obligation to treat it with the greatest care, to use it and maintain it for the good of all. In our daily activities, this guiding principle is implemented without any “ifs and buts”.
