Masciarelli, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2020
- Red
- 75cl
- ABV 13%
Gianni Masciarelli, who died in 2008, was one of the brightest beacons of the Abruzzo. The region and its Montepulciano grape had wallowed in mediocrity for generations before Gianni brought in an ethos of hard work and low yields, proving that world-class wine can be produced in Abruzzo. This wine shows big, deep, dark brooding fruit, earth, truffle and mineral surrounded by copious yet ripe tannins and perfect acidity. Decant and try then leave and try again: it just gets better.

The grapes used to make Masciarelli Montepulciano come from the Loreto Aprutino that are located at an altitude of 350 meters above sea level and are made of clay rich in sand. The clusters are destemmed and pressed when they reach the winery. The must is macerated at a controlled temperature with the skins for 10 to 15 days, depending on the vintage. Once alcoholic fermentation has finished, the wine is settled and racked to age for twenty months in stainless steel tanks.
Gianni Masciarelli was the one who set up Tenuta Agricola Masciarelli and he was also a symbolic figure in the Italian winemaking world. Masciarelli represents modern winemaking in the Abruzzo region. They have vineyards and olive groves in 4 of its provinces, where they work with innovative methods but also with a commitment to respecting the environment and using certified principles of sustainability.
