Le Thadee, Sagrantino di Montefalco Carlo Re 2018

Fermentation is in stainless steel tanks and terracotta amphorae, maceration is between 10 to 18 days depending on the level of extraction of the polyphenols, with pumping over and punching down. Aged in French oak barrels with different levels of roasting for eighteen months, with monthly batonnage.

Le Thadee is a young winery, founded in 2018 and located in Pietrauta near Montefalco (Umbria). Montefalco is famous for its "Sagrantino di Montefalco", the wine originally made for the Popes and the Vatican. The winemaker Massimo Giacchi has purchased 5 historic vineyards in and around Montefalco and processes them completely organically. The European organic certificate has been applied for, but can only be displayed on the bottle after 4 consecutive years of fully organic work. Because the winery started in 2018, 2022 will be the first harvest year in which the organic certificate is stated on the bottle. The fact that Le Thadee has old vineyards is evident from the vineyards for the Trebbiano Spoletino, which contain vines from before the phylloxera plague (late 19th century) that destroyed almost all vineyards in Europe. These old vines are more than 128 years old and have a distinctive pruning method: the vines were pruned like trees, with the grape-bearing twigs being led to the sides. The "Le Thadee" logo refers to these very old sticks and also hides the letter "T" of the winery's name.
