Jochen Beurer, Zweigelt Untere Bunte Mergel 2016

An intensely deep coloured, yet bracingly fresh wine. Far removed from the overly tannic styles that some might expect. Crunchy dark fruit and forest floor are in abundance with a light pepper spice that complete this alternative, yet true Zweigelt.

His Zweigelt Untere Bunte Mergel is grown on lower colored marl on the ground between the Schilfsandstein and Kieselsansdstein. The Grapes are handpicked and sorted and farmed according to Biodynamic practices.
Wurttemberg is a thirsty state: until recently few of its wines were exported, and with no real competition, there was little impetus to make world-class wines. Now it’s all change: thanks to growers like Jochen Beurer, it has emerged onto the domestic and now international stage with serious, well crafted and unique wines.
The Remstal was traditionally an area dominated by cooperatives, and it was only in 1997 Jochen Beurer that decided to found his own estate. Not content with that, he also took the decision early on to go biodynamic, and is a key player in reviving forgotten local grape varieties. He eschews cultured yeast, and makes authentic mineral-driven wines from sandstone and gypsum keuper soils.
