Steely, racy, very pure and long. The Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Meyer Nepal comes from vines planted in the 1950s in the upper part of the vineyard and has been fermented to off-dry levels of residual sugar. Expect beautifully fresh and finely aromatic nose of grapefruit, vineyard peach, tangerine, candied lime, lime tree, and mint. The wine is superbly balanced on the palate.

Whole Riesling grapes are dropped via gravity - no pumping from a harvest trailer - onto a customised ramp and into a Slovenian-made pneumatic press. The grapes are gently pressed for two to three hours and the resulting juice flows via gravity into the cellar below for a natural sedimentation in Fuder overnight, and then put into another cask, where the must ferments. The wine then stays on its gross lees until bottling in March, April, or May. Each cask has its own name, in this case Meyer Nepal, as seen on the label.

Erich 'Winzer' Weber (Winzer is German for winegrower) and his son Johannes make ultra-traditional Saar Rieslings in and around the village of Niedermennig. They have 9 hectares of vines, the oldest of which are between 60 and 90 years old.


The Webers work organically, harvesting everything by hand, and allow ambient yeasts ferment the musts in old oak casks in a deep, cool, and damp cellar with mouldy stone walls. Most of the wines end up either naturally dry or off-dry.


They don't use commercial enzymes, protein stabilizers, clarifying agents; nor do they chaptalize, concentrate, or de-acidify their wines.“Kontrolliertes nichts tun,” Erich says. In other words, they do as little as possible.
