De Angeles, Gran Malbec 2016
Lujan de Cuyo
Juan Manuel Gonzalez
Deep ruby red in colour. Sweet and delicate aromas of plums and fresh red berries along with a delicate floral note evolve and slowly reveal a great intensity and complexity. It goes off with a bang on the first sip to then surprise with complex, intense and concentrated flavours complemented by soft and sweet tannins and a lingering finish.
The Grapes are sourced from un-grafted vines that were planted in 1924. All fruit is harvested, de-stemmed and rigorously sorted by hand before fermentation in stainless steel tanks and maturation in lightly toasted french oak for 14 months before a full 24 months aging in bottle before release.
Just off the main drag in Vistalba, a prime location that is said to have the perfect combination of Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley characteristics, you’ll find one of Mendoza’s prettiest fincas, dotted with olive and fruit trees in a manner reminiscent of Tuscany’s lovely foothills; a comparison first made by early immigrants in the 1880’s.
This glorious setting is home to De Angeles Vina 1924, whose vines were planted over a century ago. Owner Guillermo Barbier and Winemaker Juan Manuel Gonzalez are the team behind these frankly stunning, tiny-production wines.
De Angeles is a small estate in the most westerly and highest altitude part of Luján in Mendoza’s famous Zona Primera and there are no ambitions to grow or source grapes from anywhere else.
