The Daniel Fries "Devonschiefer" Pinot Noir 2023 is a rare, limited-edition release from one of the Mosel's rising stars. This particular bottling is a unique blend created by winemaker Daniel Fries resulting in only 540 bottles produced. 

Brilliantly bright and clear, reflecting its high-altitude cool-climate origin. Fresh and charming with a core of pure red fruit. Unlike his other bottlings, this blend shows a deepening of the fruit profile with absolutely no overt oak influence. Characterised by lightness, freshness, and charm. It possesses a surprising amount of texture and middle-palate weight, likely due to an extended spell in barrel before the final blending.

Sourced from the steep, Devonian slate (Devonschiefer) slopes surrounding the village of Winningen in the Mosel. Hand-harvested and gravity-fed into open oak vats for spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Aged in barriques before being blended in a stainless steel container for a "light treatment" prior to bottling.Bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its natural texture

Daniel Fries represents a new generation of German winemakers redefining what the Mosel can produce. After studying at Geisenheim University and gaining experience in Burgundy at Domaine de Montille and Oregon's Lingua Franca, he returned to his family estate in Winningen to establish his own label in 2019.

His vineyards lie on the dramatic slate terraces of the Terrassenmosel, some of the steepest sites in Europe, where every vine is worked entirely by hand. Daniel farms each parcel separately, allowing every vineyard to express its own charactger before blending where appropriate. The result is a collection of wines that combine remarkable precision, freshness and mineral character with an understated confidence that has quickly earned him recognition as one of Germany's most exciting young producers.
