Description

Black core with purple rim. Pure cassis fruit on the nose and a touch of vanilla but quite introverted still though it opens up in the glass. There's more finesse here than in the Petite Église but there's so much sweet charry oak on the palate it is a bit overwhelming. Thick and chewy on the finish. Very rich but could be more elegant. Second sample from the same barrique taken the same day: still dense but with a little more freshness and the tannins are finer, the oak less intrusive. Not sure how it will age and have given perhaps optimistic drink dates. Julia Harding, JancisRobinson.com (16.5)

Aged in 50%-80% new French oak barrels for 15-18 months. On average, the property produces between 1,000 and 1,500 cases every year.

One of the top estates in Pomerol. The 4.4 hectare vineyard is planted to 85% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc (plus 1% Malbec normally not used in the blend). The portion of old vine Cabernet Franc (up to 85 years of age) is an important component of what makes this wine unique. Those vines, and the rich clay soils are a large part of what separates the style and aromatic complexity of LEglise Clinet from the most of the other top Pomerol wines.
