Description

Deep garnet-purple in colour, the Chateau Lassegue, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015 initially shows expressive black forest cake, preserved plums and blackberry pie notes, but then an undercurrent of mocha, grilled meats, sandalwood and cigar box plus a waft of lavender reveals itself. The wine has medium to full body, is rich and densely packed with opulent layers of spiced black fruit preserves and chocolate box notions.  The tannins are wonderfully plush yet firm complemented with lovely fresh acidity. The finish is long and fragrant. This Saint-Emilion is wonderful to pour at a special occasion, but is still affordable enough to treat yourself any weekend of the year.

The vines in the clayey limestone soils of Chateau Lassegue's sun-drenched vineyards are approximately fifty years old. The wines are aged in French oak barrel for 12 months.

The historic château was purchased in 2003 by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke, along with vigneron Pierre Seillan and his wife Monique. Together, the two families set out to make it one of the premier producers in SaintÉmilion, a vision made possible by the unique position of the estate. The Château’s 34 hectares are located on the prestigious slope (Côte) of SaintÉmilion, which makes up just 3% of the appellation. Vigneron Pierre applies a rigorous viticultural philosophy of dividing larger vineyards into smaller micro-crus based on variations in soil type and topography. The vineyards are planted to Merlot (60%), Cabernet Franc (35%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%), and the vines are 40 to 60 years old.
