Tasting Notes

We've just received a small parcel of wines from Chateau Haut-Bergeron, one of the oldest producers in Sauternes going back to 1756. Now pretty much everyone has the story of 'our vineyards are next to Yquem', and yes of course Haut-Bergeron's vineyards are next-door to Yquem, but the tale runs a bit deeper than that. Haut-Bergeron was originally owned by the Marquis de Lur-Saluces himself, who in 1847 was invited by the Tsar Nicholas I on a Russian hunting trip. The Marquis instructed workers not to harvest the vineyards while he was away, and on his return the grapes had botrytised... you know the rest. Harvested very early L’Ilot de Haut Bergeron offers a very fresh style with floral and citrus notes. A rather modern Sauternes to taste young, while on the fruit.
