The nose opens with strawberry, violet and white pepper followed by a harmonious palate of juicy, concentrated and elegant fruit. A worthy partner to a fine piece of fillet steak.
The Grapes are sourced from dry-farmed vines between 20 and 40 years old. Hand-picked, barrel fermented and aged in French oak for 14 months then bottled unfined and unfiltered.
We had already been working with superstar winemaker Raul Perez for a number of years when we began working with his family estate, Castro Ventosa. This is where he cut his winemaking teeth as a teenager, and where he is still the consultant winemaker today. Castro Ventosa was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and has never changed hands. Their wines are lovely examples of Mencia at its best, the result of careful and dedicated work in the vineyard and a mostly hands-off approach in the cellar. A great introduction to this often underrated variety.
