Description

This is Mencia, Bierzo's native grape, treated to a sojourn in barrel to great effect. The rich, velvety texture and dense, darker cherry fruit offer a far more opulent take on the grape while its naturally high acidity keeps its feet on the ground. One for a rich, rib-sticking supper on a cold night. The abundant alcohol is well disguised.

Made from organic, hand-harvested Mencia grapes and from 75 year-old vines, this is a characterful red which sees 4 months in Amercian oak barrels.

Bodegas Pittacum was purchased several years ago by Terras Gauda who were looking to find a red wine with distinctive personality. The winery is located in Arganza, a town of longstanding vine-growing and wine-making heritage, nestled in the beautifully hilly landscape of the Bierzo region. The bodega comprises forty hectares of old vineyards distributed into two hundred parcels on the hillsides of the mountain belt that makes up the Bierzo wine growing region are the source for Pittacum. Soils are usually on a slope, on soils that are deep, well drained, and have moderate fertility to imbue the vines with a vigor and promote correct ripening of the grape.
