Amelie Berthaut is one of the rising stars of the Cote de Nuits. Her Cote de Nuits-Villages comes from a vineyard in the village of Brochon, just south of Fixin, in the northern part of the Cote de Nuits. This beautiful expression of Pinot Noir shows lots of raspberry and red currant on the nose, in addition to notes of wood and a light minerality. On the palate the wine is rich and balanced, has a velvety structure and lacy tannins. The fresh red fruit mixes lovely with subtle spice notes before heading into a long finish. The wine pairs perfectly with pies, sausage, red meat, poultry and cheeses.
Vineyards: The grapes come from a 0.45 hectare vineyard in Brochon. The soils are made up of chalky clay and sandy marl. The vines were planted in the 1970s.
Winemaking: the grapes were destemmed, cold soak in concrete, fermented with indigenous yeast, mostly pump-overs with some punch-downs, matured for 12 months in barrel (10% new oak).
Amelie Berthaut merged a number of plots she inherited through her father's and her mother's side of the family into a new winery with the name Berthaut-Gerbet. Amelie is in charge of winemaking, while her partner Nicolas Faure takes care of the vineyards. With experience at Prieure-Roch, DRC, and Chave that almost automatically implies top quality grapes. While studying at the prestigious Sciences-Agro in Bordeaux, she did internships in Bandol (Southern France) and Napa. Her first job was at Crater Rim in New Zealand, after which she did a vintage at her parents' winery, went back to New Zealand and then took over responsibilities in Fixin at the tender age of 25. The rest is history. Now Amelie Berthaut is one of Burgundy's rising stars.
