Fragrant aromas of sour cherry, raspberry, wild herbs, dried flowers and cracked black pepper unfold into a silky palate of red berries, subtle spice and smoky volcanic minerality. Fine tannins and lively acidity give the wine remarkable freshness and impressive food-friendly balance.

A blend led by Nerello Mascalese with Nerello Cappuccio, sourced from organically farmed high-altitude vineyards on Mount Etna. Following fermentation, the wine matures in large traditional chestnut casks, softening the tannins while allowing for the purity of fruit and the volcanic terroir to remain centre stage.

Few wineries can genuinely claim to have shaped the history of a wine region. Barone di Villagrande is one of them.

The Nicolosi family has farmed the eastern slopes of Mount Etna since the late 1600s, receiving the title of Baron of Villagrande in 1727. Today, ten generations later, the estate remains family owned, cultivating organically farmed vineyards around the village of Milo, where cooling sea breezes from the Ionian coast meet Etna’s dramatic volcanic landscape.

The family’s influence extends beyond their own vineyards. In 1869 they pioneered separate vinification for white and red grapes on Etna, helping establish a new quality benchmark for the region. Nearly a century later, Carlo Nicolosi Asmundo played a key role in writing the regulations for Etna DOC, Sicily’s first DOC appellation.

These wines are wonderfully authentic expressions of Etna: elegant rather than powerful, driven by freshness, volcanic minerality and native grape varieties. They capture everything that makes this remarkable mountain one of the world’s most exciting wine regions.
