Mas Macia, Cava Brut Nature Reserva NV, Spain
A fresh and lively Cava with complex flavours of baked apples and stone fruits with herbal notes and some nutty, marzipan, yeasty notes from time on the lees. Good acidity and a long, dry savoury finish.
AA Badenhorst, Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2020, South Africa
A rich and concentrated Chenin Blanc from very old vines, un-irrigated and farmed as organically as possible. Flavours of ripe apples and honey and a creamy texture give the wine richness and weight whilst retaining the thrillingly zippy tang of Chenin's acid backbone. It will cope beautifully with roast pork or roast chicken and would do a rich fish pie serious justice.
Framingham, Classic Riesling 2019, New Zealand
Jamie Goode calls this estate 'One of Marlborough's hidden gems' and so it is. This is Riesling produced with great love and care from older vines in a single plot in a late-picked off dry style. The heady nose is all blossom and juicy citrus, the flavours orange, peach, ginger and lemon peel .It's a fantastic wine with Thai food - the delicate sweetness takes the heat out of chilli and ginger and flatters the clean aromatics of lime leaf, coriander and Thai basil.
Fabio Motta, Pievi Bolgheri Rosso 2018, Italy
A full-bodied and ripe Super Tuscan. Fresh red fruits, interwoven with balsamic notes and a rich minerality. The tannins are ripe and silky and the balance between alcohol and acidity creates a fresh and fragrant mouth feel. Versatile and pairs with most food in the same way as a right bank Bordeaux.
Cline Cellars, Lodi Zinfandel 2018, USA
Classic Californian Zin and always a winner. Showing a wide array of ripe almost sweet berry fruit including black cherry and strawberry. Oak ageing (8 months in French oak, 35% new) provides just the right amount of toasty vanilla character whilst the overtly ripe and luscious Zinfandel fruit envelops any tannin making this beauty big and bold.
Botter, Gran Passione Rosso 2019, Italy
60% Merlot, 40% Corvina from the Veneto made in a similar way to Amarone but with grapes dried on the vine for around 15 days. This process gives a lot of the richness of Amarone but with a fresher impression.
