Schloss Lieser, Riesling Kabinett 2019
The Riesling Kabinett SL has a clear and ripe fruit aroma, but is finer, and more vegetal and mineral than the more fruit-driven estate Riesling. Lean, lush and round, this is a very enjoyable and finessed Riesling with lush fruit, crystalline acidity and stimulating salinity which works well with the noticeable sweetness in this Kabinett. This will pair well with spicier dishes as well as being an amazing aperitif.
The grapes come from a steep sided blue/grey slate vineyard. Everything is carried out and managed by hand. Fermentation takes place in inert vessels at cooler temperatures to retain the freshness in the wine. Fermentation stops early leaving c.60g/l residual sugar.
This Estate is one of the new stars of the Mosel that in Thomas Haag (son of Wilhelm at Fritz Haag), has one of Germanys brightest up and coming winemakers. His prime plots of land are in the top due south-facing Niederberg Helden vineyard of Lieser. Though just a few hundred metres from his fathers Brauneberg vineyards, the heavy thicker set grey/blue slate of the Helden vineyard produces heavier wines that sometimes require more initial bottle bottle age before showing their true colours. Rigorous work in the vineyard and microscopic attention to detail in his cellars, guarantee a consistent production of good wines in poor years and outstanding wines in great years. In fact, Thomas can regularly claim to have the Mosels lowest yields. Since 2004, Thomas has been exploiting some vines in the famous Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr vineyard, given to him by his father Wilhelm Haag of the Fritz Haag estate.
