Description

This bold style expresses ripe, soft tannins and a rich dark fruit flavour that will develop further layers of complexity over time. It is ready to drink now, although please allow the wine to breath for an hour or so before drinking. The wine pairs well with most foods but don't waste it on anything very spicy or drenched in olive oil. Try it with dark chocolate or some hearty red meat dish.

When Craig Wessels is not working for his animation and design agency or directing films, he and his wife Anne can be found making Restless River wines on their tiny farm in Hemel-en-Arde, located near the fishing village of Hermanus. They bought the only plot of land they could afford and have slowly transformed it into a 5-star rated winery in Platters guide. Armed with the coolest climate on the cape, self-taught confidence, tattoos, biker t-shirts, a couple of amphoras from Tuscany and a restless drive to experiment and learn, the Wessels family are producing come of South Africas most exciting wines. They farm as naturally as possible, and believe the grapes develop depth and complexity through struggle. As a result, yields are low, taking off the few tons that the weather, birds, baboons and Kwezi (the grape-loving dog) kindly leave behind. Yet the wine produced is spectacular

Fresh, crunchy, deep, still very young.

SA's most reliably balanced and engaging varietal Cab Sauv, with really beautiful genépy herbal crunch, deep currant & black cherry fruit, silky pallet slide, cacao & black licorice. Lovely acidity. Still rough edges from youth though: some boozy fumes, a little bit of smoke that threatens to go rubbery. I'd give this another several years; it'll be gorgeous.

Deep red - complex

Deep ruby red colour with a fresh red fruit & oak nose. Chewy tannins combined with some Cassis, cherry and some Ceder on the palate. Need a couple of more years in the bottle.
