Powell & Son, Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz 2016
Dave & Calum Powell
The Barossa & Eden Valleys Shiraz epitomises the philosophy of Powell & Son: to marry the strengths of the Barossa and Eden Valleys together. The aroma of this wine shows kirsch, lavender, sage and charred meats. It has a dark, brooding character to add further complexity. The palate is dense and deep with ripe black fruits: plum, blackberry compote as well as a cured meats and black olive.
A 50/50 blend of Eden Valley Shiraz from 40+ year old vines and Barossa Valley Shiraz from 60+ year old vines, the fruit is fermented separately in concrete vats before spending 15 months in 4,500 litre French oak foudres.
The Powell & Son wines are sourced from various vineyard sites throughout the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Callum and Dave Powell ( founder and former winemaker at legendary Torbreck Vintners) employ traditional, minimalist winemaking techniques to produce a wine that speaks of the place that it was grown. Their inspiration for winemaking having its roots in France’s Rhone Valley, Powell & Son red wines are made from the classic Rhone varietals: Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro and its whites: Roussanne, Marsanne as well as Eden Valley Riesling. The Powell philosophy is that a great wine is made in the vineyard and so Callum and Dave work the vineyards they use on their own in the Winter and Spring seasons, then in Autumn pick the fruit and vinify using old concrete ferment vats and basket pressing – producing unique and expressive wines from their most prized vineyards throughout the Barossa.
