Tasting Notes

The fashion for chardonnay used to be the big, buttery, oaky wine. Do we care for fashion? Pah! This is a wine that is fresh and has great fruit flavours that expresses the vineyard it was plucked from. The wine is straw yellow in colour. The aroma offers an abundance of ripe stonefruits and citrus. These fresh notes are complimented with creamy layers from the wild and malolactic ferments. Memories of baked pastries and toasted nuts come to mind. It has a deliciously smooth yet juicy palate where flavours of stonefruits intertwine with the creamy and toasty characters. It is a wine with veiled complexity and richness but with a refreshing finish.

Jules Taylor is lucky enough to say she was born and raised in Marlborough. She has in a way grown up with the wine industry in the sense that she shared formative years with the wine industry. Marlborough was only planted to vines in the early 1970s and really only hit the world map in the late 1980s. Jules never had the burning desire to be a winemaker when growing up, rather the seasons of the wine industry seemed perfectly normal and she pursued a zoology degree. Upon discovering that there was not a big call for zoologists in that area, she decided to get a formal education as a winemaker. Her first real job as a winemaker was at a custom wine facility in Marlborough, but she took advantage of the northern hemisphere vintage and started doing vintages in Italy, and also got experience closer to home in Australia and Cloudy Bay. Fate landed her at Kim Crawford winery, which was eventually sold, and Jules became the Constellation NZ senior winemaker. Working at Kim Crawford was important because she met a few key people who encouraged her to make wine under her own name. A long time passed with Jules doing a day job and making wine under her own name on the side. The side project started off very small and grew over time. At the present time, Jules Taylor makes Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. One of Jules Taylor’s passions is Sauvignon Blanc, and she makes a very lively version. She is married to George, also a winemaker, and has two kids. All grapes are sourced from the Wairau and Awatere Valleys, from small vineyard blocks, or parts of vineyard blocks.
