J.J. Prum, Graacher Himmelreich, Riesling Spatlese 2003

Vineyard: The Graacher Himmelreich is one of the most renowned white wine locations in the world. The steep south-west facing slopes with gradients up to 65 percent have stony, weathered slate soil. The slightly higher clay content compared to the neighbouring Sonnenuhr vineyard gives the wines an inviting fruit and depth. Thanks to its topography, the Graacher Himmelreich is well protected from wind and frost allowing for even and complete ripening. Many water veins ensure that the vines have an optimal supply.

Spatlese means late harvest. The wines can have a certain amount of residual sugar that is often offset by Riesling's high acidity. Spatlese wines can be dry, in which case you typically see the German word trocken on the label.

Manfred Prum is one of the few real international superstars on the German wine scene. The ancient, partially ungrafted Riesling vines in famous locations such as Graacher Himmelreich or Wehlener Sonnenuhr produce vintages that, with their unique balance of fruity sweetness, vibrant minerality and classy acidity, are among the most sought-after white wines at home and abroad. The legendary maturity of Prum’s wines in particular has contributed to the winery's fame. The coveted Auslese wines are guaranteed to have a life expectancy of several decades with steadily increasing quality development.

The winery is now run by Manfred and his daughter Katherine Prum.
