Description

The Cream is blended at the optimum time from the best barrels from First Drop's most prized vineyards to create the ultimate expression of Barossa Shiraz from the vintage. A rich, textured, seamless wine that combines power and elegance. It's seductive, with a pedigree that will see it mature for a further 10 to 15 years. Indulge now or reward yourself later.

Lifted black fruit aromas with hints of smoke, tar, leather, florals and Indian spices. On the palate rich kirsch and black fruits, dark chocolate and licorice, balanced with textured, lingeringly seamless tannins.

The fruit is crushed/destemmed and fermented at temperatures ranging from 20- 25C for 10-12 days on skins. The ferment is managed by a variety of techniques, including ‘aerative pump overs’ and ‘drain and returns’ which assist in extracting colour, flavour and tannin from the
grapes. At the end of fermentation, it is drained/pressed, and transferred to new American oak barriques, new French oak hogsheads and 3 and 4 year old French oak hogsheads to undergo MLF. Post MLF, sulphur dioxide is added, and the wines mature sur lie for 20 months. The final
blend consisted of 32% new French oak hogheads and 12% new American oak barriques. This wine was bottled unfltered in November 2017.

First Drop was born in 2004. Conceived by two friends, Matt ‘Gantos’ Gant and John ‘JR’ Retsas, with a desire to make wines to drink, not just appreciate. Mother’s Milk!  Based at the ‘Home of the Brave’ in the Barossa, First Drop is making wines with flavour, texture and a splash of funk; from fruit sourced from unique vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa to bring you a diverse, deliciously exciting and thought provoking line up of flavours. Seriously fun!

JancisRobinson.com 17+pts (2016) - Deep black, with some purple tints. Needs coaxing from the glass. Layered cinnamon-clove oak, chocolate, bacon fat and dense, baked black fruit. Minty touch to dense, super-ripe black palate fruit. Spice, chocolate and savoury tones. Big structure. A bit alcoholic! (TJ)

Huon Hooke 96pts (2015) - Deep red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is alcohol-lifted and rich in dark chocolate and mocha, with some regional ironstone and metallic notes. The palate is concentrated and powerful, very intense and driving. A very full-bodied, dense, powerful shiraz, with amazing persistence and mouth-coating tannins. A massive, ripping shiraz.
