Tasting Notes

This Bolgheri Rosso is a classic, but unconventional blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, featuring all the qualities of a full blooded Bolgheri wine: it is elegant, full of ripe fruit, it has silky tannins, a minerality to it, and it is extremely drinkable.

Fermentation of each varietal is done separately with only natural yeast in 33 hl. oak barrels. The cap is pushed down manually twice a day and also delestage is used to let the must breathe. Fermentation takes two weeks for each varietal, after which time the wine is blended.Malolactic fermentation takes place in second and third year barriques. Aged in second and third year barriques for 12 months. The wine is bottled without filtering or fining.

Motta winery, a new, strong name in Bolgheri.Even though Motta winery is young, it lacks nothing in passion, drive and experience. Motta is the realization of one man's dream, Fabio Motta, who founded the winery in 2009 with the acquisition of 4 hectares of vines that were planted in 1997 within the Bolgheri DOC. The position was excellent: overlooking the sea, at the feet of the characteristic rolling hills of Bolgheri, with a south-western exposure. But Fabio Motta was no newcomer in Bolgheri. He worked for many years with esteemed Bolgheri producer Michele Satta, whom is now, in addition to being both his friend and mentor, also his father-in-law.The wines of Fabio Motta respect and reflect the characteristic traits of the Bolgheri terroir, interpreted within the unique frame of each vintage. Fabio likes to say that the two main ingredients of his wines are fruit and freshness. He considers himself no more than a facilitator. It is the land, the grapes and the weather that shape the personality of his wines.

Wine Advocate 91pts (2016) - From a single-vineyard parcel comes this lovely 50/25/25 blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 Bolgheri Rosso Pievi is all about buoyancy and brilliance. Fabio Motta strives to construct the vertical aspect of wine, and it really shows through all the ripe fruit in this direct and straightforward red. You get terrific value in this vintage.
