Domaine Bott-Geyl, Riesling Mandelberg Grand Cru Vendanges Tardives 2011 (50cl)

The area of this vineyard is over 33 hectares at about 220 to 270 metres altitude, facing south-southeast. The soil has chalk with magnesium and chalk in stones, which give the wine a fine smooth, supple acidity.

After his apprenticeship and years of travel, which included stations in South Africa and Australia but also to the Burgundian cult winemaker Dominique Lafon, Jean-Christophe Bott took over his parents' estate in Beblenheim in 1993 and quickly developed it into one of the great insider tips in Alsace. The winery now covers around 13 hectares, including plots in five Grand Cru sites one of them being this Mandelberg. Low yields, careful vineyard work, gentle whole-cluster pressing and slow fermentation allow wines of exceptional complexity and personality to emerge in the Bott'schen Keller, testifying to Jean-Christoph Bott's comprehensive quality philosophy, which also includes bio-dynamic cultivation and wine production. Vendanges Tardive are special and rare wines that may not be sold until 18 months from the date of picking the grapes and after having gone through rigid analysis and organolectic tests. These are exceptional wines that symbolise the patience of wine growers in exceptional climatic conditions and that permit the selection of very ripe and especially botrytised grapes (noble rot).
