Description

The cold nights of the San Jose region give inky blackness and brilliant clarity to the fruit. It is here at the Mar de Piedras Vineyard lies on the boulder-shrewn slope of Mount Mahoma. The site's low vigour, mineral rich, schist soils encourage deep root exploration. The wine is dense and filling on the palate, with a marked mineral personality. - "Completely saturated black colour like elderberry juice. Still wild dark fruit but richer and a little sweeter on the nose than the Valle de los Manantiales. More black plum. Much more powerful tannins from the water stress. Firm and dry and tight. Graphite and bloody iron, very mineral. Dark, savoury and elegant even with all this power. Fresh and refined in its power." (JH) jancisrobinson.com

The Deicas family has dedicated the past 15 years to exploring new vineyard sites in Uruguay, leading to the development of new growing areas for tannat, the country's emblematic varietal. The family vineyards are in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, where the maritime influence regulates ripening, allowing tannat to fully develop its aromas and phenolics, while retaining freshness. Santiago Deicas, winemaker and 3rd generation in the family winery, crafts dry-farmed tannats that are bold and fresh, with a sophisticated tannin structure. These single vineyard wines are full expressions of the specific sites, each reflecting their unique soils and microclimates.
