The 2005 Haut-Bages Libéral is a very young Pauillac that is just beginning to show the first signals of aromatic opening. Sweet dried cherry, mint, spice, licorice and dried flowers all grace this mid-weight Pauillac. Haut-Bages Libéral is not quite as opulent as most other Pauillacs in 2005, and it could have benefitted from a bit more depth, but it is impeccably done and very rewarding today. The vineyards of this fifth growth property are situated immediately next to those of Château Latour. After a period of under-exploitation, owner and winemaker Claire Villars has worked hard to raise the quality of the wines produced and the fruits of her efforts are visible in that they are gradually regaining the following they enjoyed 100 years ago.
