Boutinot, Cuvee Jean Paul Sec Vin de Pays Cotes de Gascogne 2017
Colombard 75%, Ugni Blanc 25%
Samantha Bailey & Guillaume Letang
The rolling hills between the scattered medieval towns and villages of Gascony are predominately white wine country. Designated Pays de Gascogne in 1982, it was to here that Boutinot were drawn to source white wines from the locally grown Colombard and Ugni Blanc grapes. A fresh nose of lime, basil, freshly cut green grass and guavas. The medium-bodied palate continues with more green fruits and flowers; figs and tobacco flowers.
Vines are trained using the Guyot system and vigorous grape selection is used to capture the fresh aromatics and flavour of this Blanc de Blancs from the southwest province of Gascony. On delivery to the cellar, the grapes are cooled by gas (CO2), undergo maceration pelliculaire for 5-15 hours, then pneumatique pressing, and debourbage a froid. Alcoholic fermentation is started by cultured yeast and once fermentation is complete, the wine is conserved on the lees to retain maximum freshness.
Like all good stories, Boutinot France's is both long and a little bit complicated! Boutinot began as a tiny importer in 1980, specialising in French wines. After 10 years, business had grown and Samantha Bailey packed her bags to set up an office in Burgundy. Today, Boutinot has over 20 employees who take care of production across the whole of France, covering fresh whites and ross from Gascony, mineral wines from Burgundy, and joyful varietal wines from Languedoc among others. We don't use any single 'model' to source our wines; instead, a combination of sources are used, from large-scale, high-quality co-ops to small, family growers and single domaines as well as our own vineyards in Cairanne and Saint-Vran. Drawing on the expertise of our 4 winemakers and network of partner growers, we seek to deliver the higest quality to price ratio possible at every price point.
