Bodegones del Sur, Amphora Merlot & Tannat 2018
Merlot 50%, Tannat 50%
This natural wine combines the typical tannins of Tannat with the smoothness of Merlot. Proximity of the vineyards to the sea gives the wine fantastic freshness, while ageing in amphora provides it with a beautiful purity of dark fruit. This blend shows fresh aromas of dark berries and plums, with some notes of spices, while on the palate it is juicy and elegant with a long lasting finish.
Both varieties, Merlot and Tannat, were harvested and fermented together. Co-fermentation enhances the stabilisation of colour and the development of different flavour profiles. The alcoholic fermentation and the malolactic conversion were done in clay amphorae, followed by 9 months of ageing in the same vessels. The only addition of oenological products is a small quantity of SO2 after malolactic fermentation, keeping total SO2 concentration very low.
The grapes for this wine are grown in two different vineyards. The Tannat comes from the Progreso region in Canelones with clay and limestone soils that retain moisture for the roots well, a key requirement for high-end Tannat. The Merlot comes from Garzon, where the soils consist of with degraded granite, which gives minerality to the wine. In the vineyards Bodegones del Sur works organic and in the cellar they employ low intervention practices.
