Old vine Tempranillo & Touriga Nacional planted at high altitude (700+m), on the edge of the Spanish meseta, in granite and schist and a high silex content. This is a long forgotten terroir which is now being rediscovered. Beyra tinto offers an unoaked expression of crunchy berry fruit and spice, with super acidity. Less on tannin, more on flavour.
Hand picked grapes, reception with full destemming, followed by crushing and cooling. Fermentation between 22–26C during 7 days with smooth maceration.
In 2011, I returned to the same winery where in 1987 I worked my first harvest, between the cold and in the highest vineyards in Portugal. This happened in a small village called Vermiosa, a remote yet magical corner of the Iberian Peninsula, between the Upper Douro and Beira Alta - my family's heartland - near the border with Spain. The winemaking heritage of this region is one of the hidden treasures of Portuguese Wines. Here we find old vines of native grape varieties perfectly adapted to the rugged climate caused by the high altitude, along with the soil, where many veins of quartz run through the schist and granite. The BEYRA Wines have the character of Beira Interior: wines of great complexity resulting from the combination of aromatic intensity, minerality and freshness.
