Zahel, Ried Reisberg Maurerberg Riesling 2019
On the nose this Zahel Riesling is calm and beautifully pure… sun-warmed ripe peach skin to the fore, maybe an elusive hint of ginger… not a lot more… not at first anyway, which does not really adequately prepare you for the first sip. It is hugely, impressively, wonderfully booompphhhh. There is some residual sugar, but its only around 5.5g/l, the rest of it is pure ripeness and then the juiciness and acidity literally flood through and it is so polished as well. Lots of depth. For something this appealing, this commercial and this downright delicious to manage to come across as genuinely fine rather than tarty or crass is quite an amazing feat! Form a disorderly queue now!
This wine is made from grapes from a single vineyard named Reisberg, situated within the city limits of the Austrian capital Vienna. The 40-year-old vines grow an poor, chalky soil.
The spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel vessels, as does the maturation.
The Zahel Maurerberg Ried Reisberg Riesling 2019 can be stored for three to five years, but drinks wonderfully now.
Drink chilled at 8 degrees Celsius.
Zahel works according biodynamic principles. It is a traditional Austrian/Viennese winery in that it sell its wines through their own tavern. So, we are very happy have been able lay our hands on some of their beautiful wines.
