Triangle Wines, Calco Chardonnay 2018, Limari Valley, Chile
Calco is a new collaboration between Triangle Wines (aka Ben and Alvaro from Indigo) and the De Martino family, to make small batches wines from specially selected plots in the cool Pacific influenced Limarí Valley. This Chardonnay shows fresh aromas of citrus and stone fruit intermingled with a saline note. Medium bodied with a smooth texture and concentrated fruit, balanced by fresh acidity. The finish is long and mineral.
Grapes are sourced from the Limarí Valley, where the cooling influence from the Pacific delays ripening, giving a long steady growing season. The Chardonnay vines were planted in 2005 on their own roots. Soils are clay and limestone.
The farming is lutte raisonnee (Sustainable).
The grapes were destemmed and pressed gently to avoid extracting bitter phenols. The juice was left to settle and then put into used 228-litre French oak barrels where the alcoholic fermentation took place with natural yeasts at temperatures ranging between 18°C and 22°C. Bâtonnage was kept to a minimum and the wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged for 12 months in neutral oak barrels before bottling.
This is Indigo Wines' second South American partnership. De Martino are a leading producer in Chile, making terroir-driven wines from several regions. The first wine of this collaboration comes from the Limarí Valley, where the combination of cool coastal climate and limestone soils create the perfect recipe for a lean and pure Chardonnay like Calco. The project does not stop here – Indigo continue on their search to find the best terroirs and hands to create wines to believe in.
