Novum, Marlborough Chardonnay 2019
A stunning example of New Zealand Chardonnay. Great freshness and complexity mingle perfectly together with notes of citrus peel, hazelnuts and sandalwood smoke. There are some slight reductive (smoky) notes but it is so refined. Think of it like a slightly more giving and modern style of White burgundy. It will not disappoint.
The grapes are hand sorted and picked with specific parcels in the vineyards used to create the most intense and expressive wine possible. There is some use of Oak, approximately 20% new. Malo is allowed to take place spontaneously.
Owned by William Hoare and Rachael Jackson-Hoare, Novum wines are based in Marlborough, their first release being the 2016 Pinot Noir and 2017 Chardonnay. They harvest from small parcels rather than the whole blocks of both their family owned sites as well as other vineyards owned by their friends. They have learnt that the best fruit usually comes from a small pockets of a great vineyard. They might harvest just a few rows, or one particular side that has the best exposure, a particular ridge running through the vineyard or parcel that has a slightly different soil composition.
