Ivo Varbanov – Bulgaria’s Rising Star
Posted on July 31 2014
When longtime customer and noted classical pianist Ivo Varbanov told us that he had begun making wine in his homeland of Bulgaria we were naturally eager to sample them. Bulgarian wines have been on our shelves for a few years now and we’ve found them to offer excellent value for money relative to their quality.
An accomplished pianist since the age of six, Ivo’s CV includes performances with the London Philharmonic, dates at the Royal Festival Hall and several CD releases. Not content with musical success, his small artisan winery produced their first vintage in 2008 and the wines have rapidly gained critical acclaim and commercial success for their distinctive style and exceptional quality. Organically farmed and produced in tiny quantities, we feel these wines represent a leap forward in terms of quality wine making for Bulgaria and are pleased to offer them at an extra discount when buying six or more.
This Chardonnay is fermented with wild yeasts and aged for fourteen months in Bulgarian new oak. Rich and full bodied with nutty, creamy flavours this rivals serious Burgundy at a fraction of the price and would be a great complement to white meats and strong cheeses.

Intense, powerful and full-bodied with brooding dark fruit and more than a hint of peppery spice this muscular Syrah is a must for fans of full-bodied reds. 30 months of oak ageing adds structure and balance and elegance to a vigourous palate. This wine recently reached number three in a ranking of Bulgarian reds from the 2010 vintage.
