Clos des Fous, 'Cauquenina', Maule, Chile, 2013

About this wine

Clos de Fous is a collaboration between viticulturalist Pedro Parra and winemakers Francois Massoc and Paco Leyton. Pedro is known for having discovered many of the most exciting vineyard sites in Chile and has consulted for many of the biggest names in Chilean wine. Francois and Pedro both spent time working and learning their craft in Burgundy, and this informs their choice of name. They describe themselves as 'Fous' (crazy) beacuse they are known for seeking out extreme terroirs in non-traditional parts of Chile, especially the far south.

Cauquenina in 2013 is a blend of 36% Carignan, 18% Malbec, 15% Syrah, 15% Pais, 9% Cinsault, and 7% Carmenère. Bright, 'new world' fruit character sits appetisingly alongside savoury and spicy notes, while the palate shows stoney mineral character and grippy 'old world' tannic structure.
