The Rude Mechanicals, Keith Tulloch, Viognier/Pinot Gris, South East Australia, 2017

About this wine

This is definitely a candidate for the most captivating label in the shop, and more than lives up to its packaging. The blend is 60% Viognier and 40% Pinot Gris with both varieties reflected in different ways in the finished item. The nose is all ripe, peachy Viognier fruit, the palate rich, layered and grippy from the spicy Pinot Gris, of which a small percentage is barrel fermented for extra texture. It is a big mouthful, but one that contrives to be refreshing, surprisingly long and with a very balanced 13% alcohol. Drink with white meat, a fish pie or on its own.
