The Douro is the source of some impressive table wines beside its more renowned product –Port. This wine is a blend of fruit from two single vineyards, Ervamoira and Bon Ares, and 3 grapes – Touriga Nacionla, Tinot Roriz (Tempranillo) and Touriga Francesa. Schist and granite soils and a tough climate ensure low yields and concentration of flavours. It’s a rich and spicy red with typical Portuguese freshness and grainy tannins on the finish. Open ahead of time and enjoy with a rich stew or cassoulet.

This biodynamic wine from Navarra in Northern Spain is attracting a cult following in our shops. The fruit of 50 small parcels of vines goes into this wine and the aim of the producers is to protect the fertile local countryside and its biodiversity. The blend is diverse: 34% Grenache, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 6% Tempranillo. The wine is a dark crimson and unleashes lively mulberry fruit. There is some good structure but it is ready to drink now. Hailed as 'very good value' by wine expert Jancis Robinson.

A delightful Sauvignon Blanc from Henri Bourgeois – master maker of Sancerre, who now also makes Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand. It’s difficult to better this for value – it is in effect a mini – Sancerre at a much more accessible price. Lifted and fresh and zingy with all the ripeness of the warm 2009 vintage. The perfect thing to drink with goat cheese – r mussels or white fish - and it makes a great aperitif too.

A Shiraz/Viognier from McLaren Vale in Australia that showcases the stand-out qualities of two differing grape varieties. The nose combines the perfume of the Viognier with the smokey, brambly Shiraz and there is great depth on the palate as well as excellent structure. A small quantity of the wine was fermented in new French oak to add complexity to the final product.

Paying homage to a history of wine-making at Campuget on the right side of the Rhone that is documented back to 1753, this is a 100% Syrah wine that has seen no oak at all. It's a deep purple with forward blackcurrant spice that gives way to silky, fine tannins and a smooth, crisp finish.

This northern Italian white has a lovely nose of ripe citrus and flowers. It is medium weight in the mouth with bucket loads of soft, tasty citrus fruit and a nice length on the finish.

One of my favourite white wines in the shop! Light and crisp green fruit flavours with a hint of spice backed up with a racey, zesty minerality. Blows your average Sauv Blanc clean out the water!

If you haven't tried Albarino then you are in for a treat and this is a stunningly good value example. Very bright and pale lemon in colour. Forwardly fruity citrus aromas blend harmoniously with fragrant mountain herbs and a sweeter baked apple note. Generous on the palate with a weighty leesy texture, with the ripe fruit balanced by a refreshing smack of acidity.

A quaffable red from Languedoc in the south of France. It's a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault using some very old vines; in fact the Jougla family have owned their Domaine since 1595! Cherry and toast aromas give way to a tender palate of berry fruit with a hint of tannin for structure. An excellent wine to have with cold meat or a cheese board.

A great example of a Veronese Valpolicella. Driven by cherry, supported by strawberry, there are floral aromas and a rich mouthfeel. A fantastic wine to accompany grilled meat or pasta dishes and will excel with pork.

A full-bodied yet subtle Bordeaux from Fronsac. Chateau Mayne-Vieil is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and provides warm, earthy aromas in a spectacular nose. The palate is no let down with redcurrant character, tobacco notes and a deep, long finish.

Gianni Masciarelli, who died in 2008, was one of the brightest beacons of the Abruzzo. The region and its Montepulciano grape had wallowed in mediocrity for generations before Gianni brought in an ethos of hard work and low yields, proving that world-class wine can be produced in Abruzzo. This wine shows big, deep, dark brooding fruit, earth, truffle and mineral surrounded by copious yet ripe tannins and perfect acidity. Decant and try then leave and try again: it just gets better.

The Gamay grape is thriving outside its traditional home region and this is a great example of a Loire Valley take on the Beaujolais staple. An aromatic, fruit-driven, supple wine with medium body, black cherry and bluberry flavours rounded off with a mineral finish.
