Refosco is another little known Italian grape which is highly regarded in its naitive Fruili. It produces spicy raspberry and stewed fruits characters with a nice little bit of grip and lively acidic structure.

This 113ha property in the cool, maritime, Walker Bay area is just behind the old fishing village of Hermanus and was founded by Anthony Hamilton Russell in 1994. The wines are named after the rare Southern Right whales, which frequent the cool South Atlantic Walker Bay, 3 kilometres from the vineyards. With each bottle sold, Southern Right Cellars makes a contribution to Southern Right whale conservation. The wine shows wonderful balance of forward fruit and minerality with a generous complexity to complement the wine’s natural varietal citrus fruitiness.

This Argentine blend of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is unnervingly good value. Made in a modern style with deep dark fruit, this is a powerful yet subtle wine with great structure but smooth elegance. A complex and satisfying taste.

A lovely blend of Grand and Petit Manseng – native to the Jurancon region of South West France - and Chardonnay with a little Sauvignon Blanc resulting in a grapefruit –charged mineral wine which recently was voted top IGP(Vin de pays) in the UK. The richness of the Chardonnay is balanced by the fresh citrus quality of the Manseng and a very light touch of oak. Exceptionally good value for what is quite a complex and food friendly wine.

A fantastic value wine from an up and coming producer from the Languedoc in South France. It's 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah and is a deep coloured full-bodied wine with dark plum, chocolate, cassis and cherry flavours. Ready to drink now but could develop over the next year or so.

This Rioja demonstrates just how good young Rioja can be after ageing for less than six months in oak barrels. The work of famed Spanish winemaker Alvaro Palacios, La Vendimia (Wine Harvest) is a blend of Spain's showpiece grapes Tempranillo and Garnacha. Lively in colour with a ruby hue, the wine has aromas of red roses and carnations and currants, cherries, fresh nectarines, plums and wild fennel on the palate. Ready to drink now or can be aged for up to four years. Can be chilled as a great summer picnic drink.

Pinotage is a red wine grape unique to South Africa produced by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault. It produces deep red wines with smoky, brambly earthy flavours. This wine is 100% hand-harvested Pinotage grapes and aged in French oak for 14 months. Expect a deep and intense garnet colour, a nose of ripe cassis and smoky flavours fusing almond and chocolate aromas. The palate is full round with ripe, chewy tannins and coffee, cherry, tobacco and liquorice notes. Balanced acid and a firm finish with lingering sweetness.

All the sweet dark cherry fruit and a whiff of vanilla and sweet spices from the American oak barrels in which it ages combine to make this pleasing Zinfandel. It‘s not a blockbuster style – but fresher, balanced and no more than mid-weight, making it a prospect for a mid-week supper without ruinous consequences for the next day. It will cope with hot and spicy food very well.
